Leadership Principle 5: Dracarys

Last week I re-introduced myself and my multiverse. I want to spend a little time sharing some of the leadership principles that I operate with both my team and clients.

We may be familiar with the phrase, "Be careful how you treat people on the way up; they may be the people you see on the way down" or "Don't burn bridges; you never know when you might need that relationship".

Relationships are fundamental to doing business. I work with people who do and don't share the same values that I do. I know others can't do that, but I do. I have also come to understand that not everyone responds to grace, so in some situations, you need to speak to people in the language they know. For some, that is Dracarys.

Game of Thrones fans will automatically know Dracarys is the High Valyrian word for Dragonfire. Khalessi, Queen of the Dragons, was infamous for releasing Dragonfire, burning down strategically when needed for people whose language wasn't grace (that is, putting it very lightly).

Sometimes some business relationships need Dracarys. In the situations where I have applied this principle, I was prepared for the repercussions, both positive and negative. Dracarys is not my first option but its also not my last resort.
