The dirty world of NFTs

· Sustainability

NFTs are the buzzword at the moment in the digital landscape and rightfully so. Artists can create and be paid directly for their art. While NFTs democratises art there is a flip side. The environment.

NFTs mining takes at least 35 kWh of electricity and emits 20 kg of CO2 according to technologist Memo Atken. For context sending an email emits a few grams of C02.

There has been a lot of noise generated in environmentalist and sustainability circles about the impact of NFTs.

I think there is a solution.

There needs to be a reimagining of how NFTs are mined to include sustainability and green practices. This will take time and until then, it is just going to be dirty.
