In a move to develop local talent, Nigeria's advertising regulator has implemented a complete ban on foreign models and voice-over artists from October 2022.
There are so many implications about this decision that I find interesting:
- This decision sends a message about how beauty is defined and in-country representation
- Developing local talent creates jobs and retains talent
- Access to the supply chain increases significantly with multinationals looking to local experts for sourcing
A lot of Nigeria's advertising is shot in Kenya and South Africa. Could the regulators move to Nigerian locations for Nigerian ads next?
This signals what is to come in the African Media Industry. I wonder how many other African countries will follow Nigeria's example.
What do you think about Nigeria's decision to impose this ban?
