U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, on her final day in Ghana (as part of her tour of Africa), announced a pledge of $1B to advance the economic empowerment of women and girls.

"Improving the economic status of women and girls is not only a matter of human rights, justice and equity, it is also a strategic imperative that reduces poverty and promotes sustainable economic growth," the U.S. vice president's office said.

The pledge is not a single source of funds from the U.S. government. It combines the Private Sector, Government and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as funding partners for this initiative.

Economic empowerment of women and girls is fundamental to a sustainable future and essential for social and economic sustainability. This is a welcome initiative.
